Freeman Lan
Principal Investigator
Assistant Professor, Institute of Biomedical Engineering

Dr. Freeman Lan joined the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto as an Assistant Professor in 2023. As a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Investigator at Scientific Interfaces, his laboratory leverages high-throughput microfluidics and synthetic biology to better understand, manipulate, and harness microbiomes for applications in human health and biotechnology.

Dr. Lan's research training spans academia and industry. He completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he combined in vitro culturing with computational modeling to investigate the human gut microbiome. Prior to his postdoctoral work, he applied high-throughput microfluidics technologies to pioneer single-cell sequencing technologies in the biotech sector. He earned his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the UC Berkeley/UCSF Joint Graduate Program and conducted his undergraduate studies in engineering, biochemistry, and microbiology at the University of Toronto.
